What It Is

The macrobiotic diet is dated to be around since 1930, it was founded by the Japanese philosopher George Ohsawa. The diet revolves around the notion of being balanced like yin and yang. This diet is fairly healthy comprising of mostly wholegrains, veggies ,beans and legumes, with the avoidance of all meat and dairy.

 The quality of the food as well as how you cook and prepare the food is also of extreme importance in the macrobiotic diet. 

Celebrities like Ariana Grande and Madonna are said to be on this diet. 

Diet Breakdown

In the macrobiotic diet should include :

40-60% whole grains such as brown rice, oats, corn, quinoa.

25-35% Fruit and Vegetables 

5-10% beans,legumes and see vegetables 

As well as fermented products like miso and kimchi.

In the macrobiotic diet, how you prepare and eat food is very important. Cooking and preparing food as naturally as possible is encouraged.

Microwaves and ovens are not to be used, as well as plastic, non stick coating pans and copper, all should be avoided.

  • Ceramic 
  • Wood
  • Stainless steel
  • Glass

Occasional Foods You May Have:

Foods like fish, nuts and seeds can be consumed in moderation a few times a week.

Nightshade Vegetables:

Nightshade vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers,  potatoes, avocados and beetroots are to be avoided. The reason for this is that nightshade vegetables all have alkaloiads that can inhibit our bodies from absorbing calcium , causing inflammation as well as joint problems.

Spicy Foods

Spicy seasonings and spicy foods are generally avoided when doing this diet. 

Other Foods And Beverages:

  • Alcohol, fizzy drinks and any processed beverages should be avoided
  • All processed foods should be avoided as well as any meat and dairy.
