Mindful Meditation : Everything you need to know

Your Guide To Mindful Meditation

Are you an overthinker? Do you suffer from anxiety and stress? Do you lack concentration? Most probably you’ve answered yes, unfortunately that’s the case of the majority of people today, which is why mindful meditation has become so popular over the years, helping many people with their mental health.

This is a guide to help kickstart your mindful meditation journey

What is mindful meditation?

Mindful meditation is about being present and ‘in the moment’ , being aware of our current thoughts, emotions and surroundings without having any strong feelings about it.

The human mind has a tendency to wander and be distracted , mindful meditation helps to train our brain to become more attentive. In turn helping us to be less stressed and more calmer.

The most popular form of mindful meditation is the focus of your breathing, its a great way to relax your mind, especially when you’re feeling anxious or stressed.

How To Start Mindful Meditation

  • Setting Time Aside   When you are beginning your mindfulness journey, it is very important to maintain a regular routine. Just like exercise and healthy eating, you wont expect the needed results if you only do it once, this is why its imperative to maintain practice for it to be really helpful. Set time aside everyday, even if its just for a minute to practice the meditation, its also been noted to help if you practice in the same location everyday.

Beginning Mindful Meditation

There are many ways to begin mindful meditation, if you want a more guided approach you can choose to download a meditation app or even follow a Youtube meditation video.

The Basics

Choose a quiet spot where you can get comfortable in, sit in a comfortable position, being aware of your posture.

Close your eyes and focus on your breathing. Take note of every inhale and every exhale that you take. Making sure to try to not let the mind wander.

Its natural (especially for the first time) to lose focus but every time you do, slowly work on getting back to concentrating on your breathing again.

 The 4-7-8 Breathing Technique

The 4-7-8 breathing technique, is a breathing technique that you can use in meditation (and even when you’re not meditating) heres how to do it:

  • Inhale to the count of 4
  • Hold you breath for the count of 7
  • Exhale on the count of 8 through your mouth, making a whoosh sound.

Conclusion

Mindful meditation is an excellent tool and once you get the hang of it, you can use it for everyday life. Whenever you have a lot going on or are feeling anxious or stressed, take a moment to pause and focus on your breathing and hopefully that will leave you feeling much better!
