Like the name suggests, double cleansing is when you cleanse your face twice. The first step is usually an oil base cleanser that comes in a balm or liquid form and the second step cleanser is the facial cleanser that you would typically use such as a foaming cleanser, jelly, or milk cleanser.
The Purpose
The reason why we double cleanse is quite simple, if you use makeup or sunscreen and only use one cleanser, there will be a remaining residual. Not to mention the impurities/environmental pollution that stays on your skin throughout the day.
Double cleansing ensures that everything comes off! Double cleansing is also a lot more gentle on the skin compared to makeup wipes which can be a bit abrasive.

Can you Use Regular oil?
It’s recommended to use first-step cleansers that are specially formulated to have emulsifying properties, so while you can use regulars oils found in your cupboard like olive oil, coconut oil, avocado oil, etc. It will be more difficult to get the remaining oil residue out of your face.
